Simple Ways to Prep Your Home for Spring

‘Tis the season for simplifying, brightening, culling, and reorganizing.

As the winter days elongate and we find ourselves opening windows and spending more time outside, it’s natural to want to sweep out our spaces and rethink our homes, post-holidays. If you’re looking for easy, affordable ways to redesign corners of your home and make your spaces work for you, you’ve come to the right place.

  1. Rethink your rugs - Washable rugs are all the rage on social media – and for good reason! Made for durability and resiliency, rugs you can throw into your home washing machine just make sense, especially in high traffic areas like the kitchen or near your front or back doors. Offered in a vast array of colors and designs, it’s easy to pick out an opulent looking rug that can withstand above average foot traffic…completely worth the splurge. We love this William Morris collection from Ruggable.

  2. Consider your counters - We all spend an inordinate amount of our day in the kitchen. Whether you’re a home chef or someone who stores dress shoes in your oven, chances are you’re refilling your water bottle, coffee mug, or grabbing snacks frequently throughout the day. Now’s a great time to take stock of what you keep on your kitchen counters, and a clean sweep will undoubtedly lift your mood and make life a bit easier. First, take a good long look at your small appliances and prioritize what needs to set out versus what can be stored nearby. Coffee pot…stays out. Toaster, maybe not. Move items around for a new look and based on your current needs. Just cleaning out kitchen gadgets (and broken cups and mugs) and setting some items in new spots can be a huge design boost! While you’re at it, rethink any canisters you have setting out…time for an upgrade? We love these vintage-inspired containers! Or these for easily seeing when you need a refill.

  3. Bring on the books - Maybe you made a New Year’s Resolution to read more fiction this year, maybe you have a stack of unread titles on your nightstand, or perhaps you just haven’t cleaned out your library in ages. Regardless, now is a great time to go through your book collection. Give away or resell titles you’ve finished or didn’t enjoy. Thriftbooks is a fantastic resource for both selling and buying second hand books. Or gift treasured volumes to family and friends for their enjoyment. Check your coffee table for books you haven’t looked through in ages and change out those titles for things you need at close hand to remember to read. Touch every book you own and ask yourself why you still need to own it (sentimentality and beauty both count!), and make a list of things you’d like to borrow from the library or purchase. A good book cleanout can keep your library interesting, keep you aware of what you need to read, and make space available for new (or new to you) titles. Want to stay organized from here? We love this book journal for noting what you’ve read and what you thought of it.

Simple changes in your home can keep your space inspiring and functional well into 2025, and these tasks are ideal for the in-between season of cold and warm. Embrace the beauty and simplicity of decluttered, organized spaces and walk into Spring feeling a little more in control of your home and spaces.
