Memphis Makes Me…Get Creative

New Year, Same You

One thing everyone loves about a brand new calendar year is the possibility it signifies. You may not be much for resolutions, and let’s be honest…for most of us, 2025 won’t be a year when all of our problems disappear…but the clean slate of what’s ahead can be thrilling if you let it be.

If you’re resolving to walk into the new year with a focus on self-care, self-expression, or simply more creativity in your life, Memphis is the place to be. Did you know that practicing creativity lowers your anxiety levels? It’s nearly impossible to be stressed and be creative simultaneously. Lean into that good news and consider these local offerings:

  1. After Hours Crafting at Davies Manor - Once a month, join fellow creatives at Davie’s Manor from 6 - 8 pm for themed crafting, wine, and time to learn and chat. February’s theme focuses on Victorian Valentines and the symbolism behind flowers. March’s theme will revolve around early spring garden prep. Register online for a small fee and enjoy the community, education, and time to unwind.

  2. 6 Week Beginners’ Water Color Class - Twice a year, award winning water colorist Fred Rawlinson offers a 6 week intensive watercolor class for beginners at Memphis Botanic Gardens. Classes are offered on Tuesdays from 9:30 - 1:30, provide a range of techniques, time to paint, and gentle  critique. If you’re on a mission to learn how to paint this year, this is how it’s done. Call the Botanic Gardens for dates and fees.

  3. Seed Library at Memphis Public Library - You’re invited to help kick off the new MPL Seed Library! This newly formed club will meet with sponsoring librarians on the second Wednesday of each month at the Benjamin L. Hooks Library on the third floor in the reading area. Club members will swap seeds, discuss gardening projects for the library and home, and enjoy refreshments together. The meeting is from 5 pm - 6:30 and you can register online for free.

  4. Pottery Class at Belltower Coffeehouse - Ever wanted to try throwing wheel throwing? Dream of making your own pieces of pottery? Need a 2 hour class, an 8 week course, or private lessons? The creative folks at Belltower Coffee have thought of everything. Explore their website for upcoming classes or the chance to book your own private lessons. With a tagline of “Craft, Caffeine, Community” - what else could you want?

Sounds like you have some new stress coping mechanisms figured out. Get creative in 2025 and take care.
