The Other Overton Park
Overton Park Avenue
If you’re not a tried and true midtowner, you may not even realize that just up the street from the sprawling metropolitan Overton Park, is Overton Park Avenue, a wide residential street with a handful of businesses and beautiful old buildings. A bit of Memphis history is preserved there, as well as some unique eateries and an idyllic neighborhood park. If you’re wanting to find somewhere new, this area of the Evergreen Historic District may be exactly right for your next city adventure.
Ecco & Tonica
Midtown and Downtown Memphis boasts plenty of the cities’ best cuisine and this nook is the perfect, intimate stop for a date night. Whether you sit down for a sublime Italian meal at Sabine Bachman’s Ecco or go for apps and drinks at Tonica a mere block away, this sweet little street has plenty for offer for an evening out. The menus at both restaurants are great for a special occasion or small party and the ambiance is charming. The small “main street” was built in the 1920s and the buildings are stately and styled. Without the hustle and bustle of Cooper Young or South Main, a lovely quiet experience is waiting to be had. Evergreen Presbyterian Church is right next door to Ecco and just a bit further down are Barton’s Car Care (locally owned and operated and highly recommended) and Tonica.
Williamson Park
Just around the corner is the neighborhood park, Williamson Park, a quiet refuge for neighbors. Williamson Park was part of a beautification effort during the first part of the twentieth century as part of metropolitan rebuilding after the Civil War. The 4.5 acre park is a long narrow greenway with soccer nets on the north side and a small playground on the south side. The park is well known, loved, and maintained but the traffic is light, making it the perfect spot for a quiet picnic or playdate. With ample green area, Williamson is always a great choice for dog walking and games of fetch. It’s often cited as a favorite park of neighbors who enjoy how quiet the area is, especially compared to Overton Park.
You may never have explored the Evergreen Historic District and Overton Park Avenue, but for an easy residential walk or a delightful date, it’s a sweet spot right in the middle of the city.
