Making Things Simply Festive

It’s the Most Decorative Time of the Year

It seems to be a universal belief…twinkle lights help us make sense of the dark, cold nights of winter. They raise our spirits, give us some beauty in the bleakness, and help us usher in the holidays and a bright new year. But what if you don’t want to break the bank…or your neck…decorating for the holidays this season? What if life has been too hectic, your expenses too taxed, or perhaps you’re just looking for an easier way to celebrate? Embracing a simpler way of adding cheer to your home may the the perfect way to dial back on the “things” of Christmas and lean in to the warmth, generosity, and community of the season.

Go Natural

Whether or not you’re going simple this year, a 2023 Christmas design trend calls for the use of natural elements in your decor. Even if you don’t do a traditional tree, think pinecones and a fir branch swag hanging from the fireplace. A glass full of cranberries or red berry branches arranged in a vase will add a pop of color with zero fuss and a string of orange slices above a window will give your room a rustic, nostalgic feel. The best part? None of these elements need to come down after the 25th. Leave your natural decor up well into January to fight the post-holiday blues and keep celebrating the beauty of winter well into the New Year. Natural decor can bring some real life into your space without cluttering it.

Go Vintage

You don’t have to reinvent the wheel to bring simple glamor and some bright whimsy to your home this Christmas. Lean in to yesteryear with a bowl of brightly hued glass ornaments (vintage ones for bonus points) on the coffee table or strung up around a light fixture. Red bows on doors or the backs of dining room chairs can add some classic color and flair and some good old fashioned strings of popcorn can brighten doorways or bookshelves. Place whole cloves in various patterns and designs on oranges and set them on your mantel for aroma and vintage charm. Small, pretty things can still be low on commitment and add a good measure of cheer.

Go Pink…or White…or Blue

Think about using infusing a non-traditional palette in your holiday decor with a monochromatic theme. Even if you’re doing without a tree or a complicated setup, a few wreaths with matching, solid color ribbons can make quite a bold statement. Think about colored candles in various hues and heights on the mantel or table for holiday drama that can be reused all year long. If your color is found in nature, consider some fresh flowers that will invigorate the space with life– and if you’re giving gifts, try to find some wrapping paper that will match. The cohesive theme will bring some clean simplicity that will for sure bring joy.

Don’t stress about decor this Christmas. Find pleasure with the simple beauty around you and remember less is more. Life can be simple this holiday season…simple and abundant with joy.
