Home Edits for the In-Between
Falling for Fresh
Early fall heralds something new…shorter days, fresh scents in the air, and the heralding of the holidays. But there are those few precious moments in between packing your porch with pumpkins and planning elaborate menus; a few moments in late September and early October when the season is at a tipping point and you can catch your breath. Our advice? Go apple picking, throw on a sweatshirt with shorts, and spend one hour every weekend cleaning something out. Every home needs a refresh before the cheer and chaos of the Christmas season.
The Library Edit
Books represent all the good things in life…beauty, sentimentality, life-transformation, community, and imagination. It’s no wonder some of us collect as many as we possibly can. If you’re a bibliophile, one of the biggest problems in your home may be finding space for the new books you’re taking in. Use this in-between season as the perfect time to file through and purge the titles you haven’t picked up in a while. It may feel painful at first, but a few questions can help guide your decisions (not to mention make space for new reads!).
Will I read this again?
What value does this title have for me? Beauty, sentimentality, and origin count!
Do I still love/like/agree with this? Give yourself a moment to really consider if you still like the book and/or agree with it. If not, it may be time to pass it on as a gift, donate to the library, or discard it. You may be surprised at how you actually feel about many books that you own.
The Desk Edit
Our desks are little snapshots of our every day lives…receipts, books, journals, the laptop, bills, writing odds and ends. Give yourself a boost by clearing off your desk in twenty minutes. Put on a great song and start tossing the things that need to go. Check all of your pens and pencils on a piece of scrap paper, file away the paperwork that needs to be kept, and toss, toss, toss. Rethink what works for you to work, and remember that beauty and order will always keep you organized and inspired.
The Kitchen Drawer Edit
Make it quick and painless. Set yourself a 10 minute timer and see how many drawers you can rifle through. A garbage bag on hand will catch the mismatched flatware, bent utensils, and overall junk that doesn’t belong. Ask yourself if any of these items have been used in the last 12 months, if any of them need to be replaced, or if any of them can be donated without your noticing. Place them appropriately and keeping moving. Wipe down the interior of the drawer and give that flatware holder a good scrub and voila! More enjoyable cooking instantly!
The Pajama Drawer Edit
We love our comfy clothes, but universally, we tend to overlove them. Take 20 minutes to edit your pajama drawer. Take note of what you need to replace, what can be moved out for another season, and what needs to be properly washed. You may notice that pajamas get musty in between seasons. We love DIVA wash for a splurgey detergent that keeps your sheets and pajamas feeling and smelling especially lovely.
These quick, simple edits will keep you rolling into a season where excess seems to reign, and prepare your space and heart for new things, new tasks, and new experiences. Enjoy the process, always set a time limit, and most of all, enjoy the in-between season that allows rest.
