Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks
Many Memphis children can attest to the sense of thrill when stepping foot in the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library. It's fitting that such a center for dreaming and learning is named for one of Memphis’ most beloved heroes. Hooks was a Memphis local who fought alongside giants of the Civil Rights Movement. And his legacy now lives on in the largest library in the city.
Ida B. Wells
Ida B. Wells is a picture of the true spirit of Memphis. She championed the rights of the oppressed in our city, even in the face of unimaginable hardship and danger. Her struggle paved the way to freedom for others, and left a legacy of hustle and grit that runs deep in our city today.
