Shelby Forest

Although the bright lights, stellar food, and fun energy of the city can be alluring, sometimes it can be just what the doctor ordered to get outside and revel in nature. One of the greatest perks of living in Memphis is having all of the resources and benefits of a city (shopping, entertainment, food, etc.) while also being located in such close proximity to a bounty of nature and outdoor-friendly environments. Among the most recognized of these in the 901 are Shelby Farms, the Botanic Gardens, and the Green Line. Slightly less known but just as exceptional, Shelby Forest is a fabulously secluded and yet vast corner of protected nature for Memphians to enjoy.

The Perfect Getaway

The charm of Shelby Forest lies in its almost 13,000 acres of gorgeous scenery and enchanting forests. Nested right next to the Mississippi River, Shelby Forest is only 13 miles north of Memphis, which is an extremely convenient location considering other average state park’s proximity to a major city. If you ever feel the urge to pack up and escape the hustle and bustle of the city, this is the ideal getaway.

There’s something for every type of adventurer at Shelby Forest!

Something for Everyone

There are a variety of activities in Shelby Forest that are perfect for large groups and individuals and everything in between. It is perhaps most known for its camping opportunities, hosting 49 campsites. Each of these campsites are well-equipped for even the most beginner outdoorsmen and are priced extremely reasonably. In addition to offering various camping options, Shelby Forest rangers host educational experiences for small groups throughout the year. This is an awesome way to spend those lazy summer afternoons or to host fun field trips for schools during warmer months.

For those who desire to be more active, Shelby Forest provides boundless possibilities. There is a lake for canoeing and kayaking, a course for disc golf, and a trail for horseback riding. One of the greatest assets of this state park is the 20 miles of hiking trails interwoven throughout. You can go on a quick trail run or get lost for hours in admiring the natural beauty around you.

Although rarely recognized for all that it has to offer, Shelby Forest is one of the best hidden gems in our county. It is the perfect escape from reality for any who enjoy the outdoors, allowing you to slip away while still being in Memphis’ backyard. It is just another addition to the list of what makes Memphis so special.
