Healthy Habits

It’s been a bit of a stressful year.

Just like the rest of the world, Memphians have had to deal with their fair share of confusion and anxiety in 2020. Our normal routines have had to adapt as we deal with more Zoom calls and less social calls, children home from school, cancelled plans, and general frustration. Now, more than ever, healthy habits are non-negotiables to surviving everyday life.

But the four walls of your own house can get pretty exhausting. It’s important that we find safe places to step outside and breathe, get a little workout in and set new goals. Memphis Rox is an ideal place to land.

Nestled near Stax Museum in South Memphis, Memphis Rox is a fully outfitted climbing gym founded on the principles of generosity and community. The gym boasts an impressive display of climbing walls with ever changing routes, as well as top rope courses allowing the climber to belay with a certified lead. The climbing area is spacious and clean and the various levels of challenge allow any climber...and I mean any...to find a course they can enjoy. Anyone from a child to a seasoned climber can discover new routes to master each time they visit the gym, making it the perfect place to set new physical goals.

Climbing to Serve

Memphis Rox is not just a gym, it’s a family institution and a non-profit organization. The gym offers memberships and suggested pricing for each visit, but no one is ever turned away because of money. The heart behind their vision is for any kid to be able to learn to climb and at Memphis Rox, they’re making that possible with each donation. In their short amount of time established in the community, they’ve provided over 17,000 meals and snacks to families in the neighborhood, provided aftercare and programming to 100 youth, and hosted two USAC climbing competitions. Memphis Rox has decided that fitness is a great way to be a good influence and they’ve invited the city to participate in their cause. Every full priced admission helps further their goal.

Fun Over Perfection

But if the true value of climbing in Memphis Rox’s state of the art gym is priceless, even more so is the community you find there. Regular climbers make friends quickly, strangers encourage each other to successfully complete routes, and new friends help kids strategize their next moves on the course. If you’re a complete novice (like me), there’s never any shame in trying something new. If the true goal is fun, the climbers at Memphis Rox just want to help introduce you to it.

This Winter, when you’re feeling the need to stretch your legs, you may find that Memphis Rox is the perfect place to go. You can mask up, keep your social distance, and try a new thing...whether it’s your first time climbing or your first go at a new route. Give what you can and give back.
