Memphis Makes Me ... Hungry

The wealth of cultural and ethnic diversity in Memphis has paved the way for a phenomenally rich food scene to cater to almost every palette. Although most famous for the bbq, locals can find fantastic options for several types of cuisine right here in the city. And no single neighborhood can claim the upper hand in furnishing the food - there are fantastic spots scattered throughout the city so you never have to drive more than seven minutes for a meal that hits the spot.

Here are a few favorites to try out:

Tacos Nganas - This popular food truck-turned-dreamy outdoor picnic area has become quite a hit with locals in recent years. Their tacos are out of this world with perfectly seasoned meat and a wide variety of salsas. They were recently voted the best tacos in Memphis! Many come for the food, but stay for the fun and festive ambiance.

Global Café - Truly a rare gem, Global Café features authentic cuisine from Sudan, Venezuela, and Syria. Refugees and immigrants from these countries (and others) are the primary chefs, and they bring a unique flair to their food which is hard to find elsewhere.

Brother Junipers - Located just next to the University of Memphis campus, Brother Junipers is a beloved icon for fabulous breakfast food in Memphis. Think: charming, homey, and downright delicious. You can’t go wrong with their homemade biscuits or chunky omelets. Be prepared to run into a few friends here on a Saturday morning since it is a popular weekend visit for locals!

Chings Wings - Even with fierce competition, Chings overwhelmingly tops the lists of most locals for best hot wings in town. Temporarily closed during the pandemic, Chings has made a massive comeback with their re-entry on the restaurant scene. Get ready to debate the best sauce flavor with passionate wing-eaters in the 901.

Jerry’s - During the summer months, lines for Jerry’s snow cones usually go all the way to the street. They have earned their fame for their wacky flavors like fuzzy navel, toxic waste, and Hurricane Elvis. In the warmer summer months, this cold treat hits the spot. If you really want to take it up a notch, you can make it a supreme and add soft serve ice cream into the middle of your cone.

Although certainly not exhaustive, this list provides a tiny glimpse into the expansive and flavorful cuisines that Memphis has to offer.
