Getting Creative with Hosting (Social Distance Style)

With the surge of the delta variant of COVID-19 in the waning summer weeks, many are looking for ways to stay connected socially while remaining mindfully cautious about limiting the spread of the virus. Disproportionately affected throughout the pandemic, many senior citizens have experienced the worst of isolation and detachment. Relational interaction and community are therefore imperative in this upcoming season!

As the weather begins to cool down with the arrival of fall, hosting a party in your outdoor space is the perfect way to provide some fun and fellowship. Here are few tips for throwing a great party with safety precautions in mind:

Invest in your outdoor space

With the Memphis heat, locals usually do not spend much time using their outdoor spaces except for the months of October, November, April, and May. However, with a few minor investments, you can make your porch or patio user-friendly for almost any time of year and host great events while still being able to social-distance! Providing a comfortable environment will be crucial for having an enjoyable party. With some creativity, you can find a solution to almost every obstacle that the great outdoors will throw at you:

  • Box Fans • Too hot? You can buy box fans online that will get the job done for a very reasonable price. Or you might even have an electrician install a ceiling fan in your porch or patio.

  • Citronella Candles • Pesky mosquitoes? Never fear. Citronella candles will keep those pests away and create a delightful ambiance.

  • String Lights • Too dark at night? String lights can brighten up your space and are especially charming in backyard trees.

Maximizing your outdoor areas will allow you to continue to share life with those you love while being mindful of safety precautions.

Dig up some new recipes for yummy treats that can be served individually.

Although everyone loves a great shareable snack at gatherings, you may have to hold off on your fabulous dips for the near future. However, this is the perfect opportunity to try out some new recipes that can be served individually. Think: ham sliders, gluten-free cupcakes, homemade chex mix served in individual cups. Do a little research and prepare to wow your guests with some new favorite treats!

Line up a few non-contact games that will keep the relational fun high.

Your gathering might be the perfect opportunity to take a brief respite from the weightier matters of the world and share some good laughs. People from around the country have invented clever and fun games over the past year that do not require physical contact. Take a look at some of the most popular group games and try out a few the next time you host.

Although we may be experiencing increased restrictions again as another wave of the virus hits, we have hope because we are far better equipped than before. This past year has revealed humanity’s resilient creativity, and we are able to build on the shoulders of others as we look to navigate this next season. As you plan to host with health restrictions in mind, take advantage of all of the brilliant ideas that those around you have used this past year!
