Elmwood Cemetery

Fall is officially here, and Memphians are definitely thrilled about it! Leaves are turning, mornings are chilly, and there are pumpkins everywhere. It’s a perfect time to be outside and enjoy the weather, especially since it’s still the safest way to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

If you’re looking for an outdoor adventure that involves history, nature, and maybe even a little spookiness, check out Elmwood Cemetery in South Memphis. Elmwood is the oldest active cemetery in Memphis, founded in 1852, and it covers about 80 acres of beautiful grounds. About 75,000 people have been laid to rest in Elmwood, including some of Memphis’ most famous (and infamous). Take some time to learn about veterans, mayors, governors, senators, artists, suffragists, civil rights leaders, holy men and women, outlaws, and millionaires who have made an impact on our great city.

Elmwood has several structures which are included on the National Register of Historic Places. Learn about Memphis history as you take in the unique architecture and style. The cemetery grounds are also an official Bird Sanctuary and Arboretum! Autumn is a great time to observe the mature tree collection, which includes more than 1500 trees of all types.

There are all kinds of unique ways to get acquainted with this local historic gem, including self-guided walking or biking tours, docent-led group tours, and even virtual tours! Check out the Elmwood Cemetery Website to register or plan a visit. Elmwood is open Monday through Friday 8am-4:30pm, and Saturdays 8am-noon, and general admission is free!
