Exterior Refresh: Colors that Pop

When the sun finally comes out and dries up the rain, Memphis is looking good this spring. Fresh green buds are promising new life and the tulips certainly haven’t disappointed. If giving your home a seasonal facelift feels like the right thing to do these days, we suggest you start with a pop of color….on the outside!

Obviously, painting the whole exterior of your home isn’t something you do all that often. The job is huge and if you’re hiring it out, quite costly. But if it is time to pick new hues for the entire home or even just the trim, coming up with classic yet modern colors will be your ticket to a fresh new look that will carry your home through every season.

New Neutrals

Heron Gray is a cool gray that gives a traditional yet trendy feel to your home.

So often, neutrals are the way to go for most homes. But neutral no longer means a blaise eggshell or a light taupe. In 2023, neutrals range from airy whites to warm chocolate and everything in between. A “neutral” palette simply means one that shows some versatility and can go hand in hand with a wide array of styles and design personalities. For palettes that will look updated yet timeless, here are a few shades we love.

  1. Linen - A light khaki that looks best when trimmed out with bright white

  2. Gray Heron - A deep bluish gray that pairs well with deeper gray as an accent

  3. Flagstone - Think New England coastal vibe…a peaceful gray that pops with stark whites

  4. Ivory - A whole house painted and trimmed out with a monochromatic off-white palette allows for any and every pop of color to sparkle.

Rich and Trendy

2023 interior design trends are calling for deeper shades of color all over the home. We’re moving away from a minimalistic, blank slate look to deep jewel tones and accent walls that pop. So if you’re considering something with a little more pizazz, we offer you deeper shades that will certainly make your home stand out.

A deep red makes an eye catching statement, and looks especially crisp with a bright white trim.

  1. Turquoise - No…not teal…at least not for the exterior of your home, but somewhere between aqua and robin’s egg blue. Trim it out with white and you’ve got a classic, Southern look that feels a little low country, a little beachy, and very charming.

  2. Deep red - We’re talking barn red or darker. Because honestly, truly, red never goes out of style when it comes to home design. Going with burgundy on the exterior of your home may seem like quite a commitment but it will look great in any season and your landscaping with look gorgeous with a scarlet backdrop.

  3. Caramelized Pears - Think of pale yellow with a hint of richness. This is a purely classic hue that’s reminiscent of the early 20th century and will look pretty on any two story home with traditional features. Trim it with a crisp white and you’ll have a hue that will go from 2023 into mid-century.

The right shade of turquoise can give your home a little low country, a little beachy, and very charming feel.

Trim it Up

A little trim can go a long way visually. If your home is ivory or white, then adding a deep black trim is a simple way to give it a more modern look. For brown homes, we love a darker chocolate trim and for exteriors that feature wilder hues…greens or deeper blues, you may choose a beige that brings out the richness of the main paint color without contrasting too much. You may be surprised at how much value new trim paint brings to your home, even if you can’t budget for a full new exterior this year.

A quick Google search of any of these color suggestions is sure to bring up a myriad of examples you can use for inspiration. Whatever you do, we recommend using an app like Sherwin Williams’ ColorSnap Visualizer so you can “see” the new color before it’s been applied. Before you know it, you’ll be enjoying a home that looks good as new!
