Color Is Back!

After years and years of muted neutrals and fifty shades of white, color is back. Some never thought the signature vibrancy and warmth of past eras of home design would never be recovered, but they have re-emerged at last. This year has marked a shift away from the overwhelming taupes and grays and ivories; homeowners are cautiously dipping their toes into richer hues. While it can feel intimidating to adjust your entire color palette, there are a few simple updates you can make to make your home fresh and current.

All You Need is a Pop

You don’t need to repaint all of your walls or revolutionize the entire design of your home to embrace more color. It just takes some intentionality. The transition from a monochromatic and more neutral palette to slowly incorporating colors can be as easy as finding strategic places to add a pop of color. Consider: funky bathrooms, statement walls, and accent pieces. Never underestimate the power of a new pillow or a bright painting that might be outside your comfort zone. A little bravery and a little boldness in the tiny details can add a rich new dimension of depth and warmth to your home. Try it out!

This Year’s Trendiest Colors

If you are going to embark upon the journey of rediscovering color in your home, start by exploring some of the trending colors in this year’s design portfolio. Vibrant is certainly the key word for this year’s most popular shades. Several interior design firms have released their top choices and they all seem to have reached the same basic conclusions:

Bold, bright, rich red.
In a defiant act of rebellion against the previously reigning neutral palettes, red has made a splash in this year’s top colors.

The Allure of Green
Green remains a fan favorite. If you are looking for a more subtle transition out of your overpowering whites and grays, natural greens are a great, soft re-entry into the world of color.

Warmer, More Interesting Neutrals
If you just can’t leave the world of neutrals, opt for warmer shades of your favorite muted palettes. People are shifting from icy, cool shades to their warmer counterparts. Be on the lookout for shades that have a yellow base.

While the conversion from soft and muted to loud and vivid will certainly take some time, design trends are finally rebelling against the dominant style that has been in vogue for the past ten years. There are always ways to incorporate the current fads while staying true to your personal style. Ultimately, however, you must choose the colors and palettes that fit the vision you have for your space and make your home a place that you love.
