Capturing Their Story

Every generation needs the voices of those who came before them. Stories have power. They can shift our narrow and inexperienced perspectives. They can guide us in the mundane daily choices before us. They can guide us in the few extraordinary choices we will make in our lives. They tell of struggle, joys, sorrows, and worlds that have since passed.

Although it is imperative that we care for our loved ones by helping them adjust to new physical realities, it is also crucial that we slow down to glean their wisdom and record their memories. Create some space this fall for your loved one to share their stories for future generations.

Here are a few ideas for ways to preserve their legacies:

Simple Yet Memorable Video Interview

One of the obvious benefits to filming an interview of your loved one is that you are able to maintain the expressions and voice of your loved one. You are able to capture their unique mannerisms, subtle display of emotions, and exact turn of phrase. Video interviews are also a wonderful option because you can easily prompt your senior throughout the interview and ask for more detail when needed. All you need is an iphone or a video camera and a microphone! You can even send the film to a company for editing.

Good Old-fashioned Writing

While some seniors may love the spotlight of a video interview, many may shy away from the camera. If this is the case, you might opt for a slightly more delicate approach. However, it can be daunting to choose a beginning point when endeavoring to transcribe all that you wish to capture. If you go the writing route, consider using one of the fabulous storytelling services that can help guide you through the process. For example, Storyworth will send a question per week to the person whom you designate. After a year, they will compile all of their answers into a beautifully bound book which you can treasure forever.

Ask and Listen

Storytelling can be as much for the benefit of your loved one as it is for you. It is a way to connect relationally. Many seniors find that sharing about their lives gives them renewed purpose in guiding the next generation. It can also inspire them to recall the many adventures and sweet memories of their lives. With this in mind, keep asking your loved ones about their lives and stories even if you don’t intend to record their answers. Be curious and come up with a list of questions!

One of the greatest untapped resources that we have as a society is the wisdom of our elders. One of the greatest tools we have for connection is storytelling. Don’t waste such a beautiful opportunity to hear from your loved one!
