Big River Crossing

Memphis & The River

Historically the foundation and formation of Memphis can be traced back to its strategic location on the mighty Mississippi River. As one of the largest inland ports in the United States, Memphis quickly became a major hub for commerce and shipping since its inception in 1819 – long before Fred Smith established FedEx headquarters here. Many icons of Memphis pay tribute to its elemental link with the river, including the famous “M” bridge, the city’s nickname “Bluff City,” and Mud Island. Today the river is also a vital contributor to the city’s social life. The  expansion and revival of Harbortown, the popularity of engagement proposals on the banks of the Mississippi, and the renovation of Tom Lee park all attest to the fundamental role that the river plays in the city. Over the last few years, the water’s edge has been a focal point of revitalization efforts.

Spanning the Mississippi

There are over 70 miles of biking / walking trails connected to Big River Crossing!

Recently city planners have invested even further in the downtown area by building the walking bridge, also known as Big River Crossing, in 2016. This walking bridge is the longest pedestrian bridge to span the Mississippi River, reaching almost a full mile in length. It also connects to a 10-mile trail that links to Main Street, so you can easily make the trek from urban downtown to the picturesque scenery of the water and surrounding nature across Arkansas. If you’re feeling a little more ambitious, you might even venture onto the Big River Trail System – 70 miles that takes you throughout the gorgeous landscape of the delta region.

Something for Everyone at the Bridge

For many, the time spent cooped up inside during the pandemic has rekindled a love for fitness and the outdoors. Big River Crossing is a fantastic way to not only get active, but also to appreciate a part of the city that is so central to the heartbeat of Memphis today. You can take your kids to watch the steamboats move lazily up and down the river or pack a picnic across the river for a romantic date night with your loved one. You can bike or run or skateboard or just walk on the bridge – whatever gets you moving! As the warmer months approach, don’t miss the opportunity to take advantage of such an awesome Memphis gem as you plan your spring and summer bucket list!
