Beale Street

Beale of the Past

One of the most iconic Memphis attractions, Beale Street, played a crucial role in shaping the identity of the city in both the past and the present. Built in 1841, Beale Street served as a center for commerce during the early days of Memphis history. After the Yellow Fever Epidemic in the 1870s, Robert Church bought land around Beale Street, developing that area and making it the arts and entertainment center of the city. This focused attention revived Beale Street from its stall after the epidemic, attracting musicians, politicians, and innovators from all over the tri-state area. As the blues scene took off with the arrival of W.C. Handy, black entrepreneurs built restaurants and businesses along the avenue with style that reflected the city’s soulful flare.

As other musicians flocked to the city, Beale became nationally reputable for its contribution to the arts, especially its role in pioneering jazz and the blues. Legends such as Louis Armstrong and B.B. King graced its bars. Even the recent movie, Elvis, featured the bustling and lively atmosphere of Beale, showing its influence on Elvis’ music and later success.

Beale of the Present

The Beale Street Flippers are fan faves down on Beale Street pretty much any night of the week.

Although Beale suffered a period of decline during the 1960s, local leaders decided to revitalize the iconic street in the 1990s as part of the downtown restoration initiatives. Today, the avenue has regained its original spirit with a vivacious music and restaurant scene. Bars, such as Club Handy and B.B. King’s Blues Club, pay tribute to legends of the past. Beale Street also hosts many events, including the Liberty Bowl Parade, the International Blues Challenge, and the Beale Street Art Crawl.

But you don’t need an event to visit Beale! As you walk down the timeless streets, you will be greeted by the swooning notes drifting from the surrounding lounges. You will smell the wafting aroma of the cooking soul food. You might even catch a glimpse of the Beale Street Flippers, giving unbelievable acrobatic performances in the middle of the street. Don’t let tourists be the only ones to appreciate the history and entertainment of Beale!
