Your Real Home
When we think about home, sometimes it’s not the house we live in that comes to mind. Maybe it’s the city that we identify with the most. Maybe it’s the neighborhood where we made the most friends or could walk to work or where everyone seemed to know each other. But, perhaps more often than not, home for us is the house we grew up in or the place where we raised our children. For some, it’s just the street name that identifies the home most dear to our hearts.
In my family, it was always ‘McNair’. McNair means the little white house in the middle of the street where the grandparents lived for fifty years and the kids were born and the grandchildren were raised. It’s where the fireworks were shot off every 4th of July and Christmas Eve was celebrated every year with homemade biscuits and envelopes stuffed with cash. It’s where you shared your chocolate marble birthday cake and picked fresh roses out back and played card games in the eat-in kitchen. McNair is where we gathered after weddings and funerals. It’s where we met when any of the relatives came into town. It’s where we stayed outside well after dark catching lightening bugs and running up and down the sidewalks. It’s where we brought our newly purchased cars so my grandfather could give his approval. It’s where we brought the newly born babies to be rocked in the La-Z-Boys in the living room.
The home on McNair was not just for us. It was a place of safety and warmth and love for a host of family and friends, neighbors and acquaintances. And even now, when someone mentions McNair with the usual fondness, we’re all transported back to a place that was home, whether we woke up there every morning or not. McNair was our gathering place...always lit up and unlocked for us. Always welcoming. Always ready with food and laughter and open to whomever you brought along. That’s because McNair was home and real homes are meant to be shared.
