Memphis Makes Me… Feel Inspired
Dedicated to See The City Flourish
Most Memphians have been confronted with the common question from visitors: Why are you so proud of your city? Usually this question subtly implies a poor reputation of the city due to some of the distinct challenges it faces: socio-economic stratification, struggling schools, violence, etc.
With the heart behind this question, however, one usually fails to see the ways in which individuals and organizations have rallied to address these issues, seeking to promote the flourishing of our city.
Memphis boasts a myriad of non-profit organizations which focus on a diversity of areas. These local organizations provide services for job training, education, youth programs, and so much more. They are defined by their contagious passion for the communities which they serve, while exhibiting deep commitment to their families and neighborhoods.
For the Next Generation
This fervor for the bright future of the city is demonstrated by the words of a teacher from Memphis Teacher Residency (MTR), a non-profit organization focused on public education. When commenting on her journey to Memphis and MTR, resident Jayce Ramsey remarked:
“What most drew me to MTR was its specific passion for Memphis. They aren’t trying to be everything to everyone, but they are constantly seeking ways to grow and refine the organization to better serve communities right here in Memphis. All of their investment goes straight into the community and returns in the form of quality education for the kids in your neighborhood. MTR makes me hopeful for the future of the city because we’re investing in the next generation. We exist to push them forward and give them the voice and power to do the same for those after them.”
Above and Beyond
Not only have these non-profits faithfully served the city for many years, but they have also risen above and beyond the call of duty during the pandemic. Organizations like Agape Child and Family Services and Neighborhood Christian Center have worked tirelessly to provide assistance for the most vulnerable in the neighborhoods they serve during these past few months. Our non-profits have illustrated their deep commitment as they have pivoted in these unforeseen circumstances and continue to meet the needs of our city with creativity and perseverance.
Although these organizations focus on a wide variety of areas and have differing methods, they are all united in one mission: to see the city and its residents thrive.
Certainly, the individuals who form the backbone of these organizations have made their city proud.
Their passion is contagious. Their impact is moving. Their dedication is inspiring.
